Everyday Leadership Opportunities

Most people already have leadership roles of one kind or another, although they may not think of them in that way. Examples of leadership activities include:

  • Taking the initiative (volunteering) to carry out a task, especially an unpleasant one
  • Providing advice and guidance to your own children or to a children's group (Cubs, Guides, Scouts, etc.), or coaching a sport
  • Proposing a solution to a minor (or major) workplace problem
  • Inviting some neighbors to get involved in a community activity
  • Planning and organizing a meeting
  • Providing client support and education

With this in mind, identify two additional everyday leadership opportunities in your community or workplace and characterize each one in the following ways:

  • Is it a leadership or management role, or both? If both, which one is more important, and why?
  • Is it a formal or informal leadership role? Explain why.
  • What formal/informal responsibilities does the role involve?
  • What reservations might someone (e.g., you) have about taking on those responsibilities?
