"The HPA establishes a common framework for the governance,
regulation and discipline of all regulated heath professionals.
The HPA also gives health professions new flexibility
and eliminates exclusive scopes of practice."

Why it is important for you to learn this material.

Bill 22, otherwise known as the Health Professions Act (HPA) was passed by the Alberta Legislature in 2001. The purpose of this act is to bring all of the regulated health professionals involved in the delivery of health care services to Albertans under one legislative framework, eliminating individual acts for each of the 28 regulated professions. Licenced Practical Nurses are a regulated health care profession and thus now are governed by this act.

What does this mean to the LPN, both as a professional and as a leader? This lesson will discuss both of these issues, as well as providing the learner with a basic understanding of the HPA.

As a result of studying this module, learners will be able to:
  1. Summarize the purposes of the Health Professions Act.
  2. Identify the health care providers covered by the act.
  3. Outline the processes of registration and practice permit renewal.
  4. Outline the process for a professional conduct review.
