Computer Literacy Self Assessment

Basic Skills

Can you:

  1. Locate and open a file on a hard drive, USB drive (also called jump drive, flash drive or thumb drive) and/or network server?
  2. Save a file to a specific location?
  3. Connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
  4. Navigate between two or more applications without closing and reopening them?

Web Browsing Skills

Can you:

  1. Browse to a specific url with a web browser?
  2. Print a page?
  3. Follow a hypertext link?
  4. Conduct a basic search using a search engine?

Email Skills

Can you:

  1. Send a basic email?
  2. Send a group email?
  3. Forward an email?
  4. Send an email with an attachment?
  5. Open an email attachment?
  6. Copy and paste text into an email?

Word Processor Skills

Can you:

  1. Open a new document?
  2. Locate and open a previously created document?
  3. Save a file document to a specific location?
  4. Rename a document?
  5. Format Text (size, font, color etc)?
  6. Print a document?

If you could not answer "yes" to all the above questions,
you might want to consider upgrading your computer
user knowledge and skills before the course begins.

  1. U of Minnesota (Duluth) Computer Literacy Self-Assessment - the (free) detailed, automated self-assessment exercises give you an overall assessment of your skills in various areas of computer usage and help you pinpoint specific areas where you might need to develop additional skills.
  2. Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101 - a (free) comprehensive online "course" that provides information on a wide range of computer-related knowledge and skills. The site is updated regularly, and offers the option of downloading the course files (or receiving them on CD-ROM) for a small fee, or to work through the material online at no cost.
