Example of a Major Project Assignment

Undertake a Leadership Initiative

This Major Project takes the place of a Final Examination in this course and accounts for zz% of your total mark.

You will begin working on this project while you are working on Module 1, and will continue working on it throughout the course, with marks being assigned to each stage of the project as you complete it.

The Learning Objectives for this assignment include all Outcomes and Objectives identified for this course.

To complete this assignment, you are to:

  • Identify and describe a leadership opportunity at work or within your community;
  • Define a realizable goal; and,
  • Design and implement a plan to provide leadership in realizing that goal.

General Instructions:

  1. The focus for this assignment is on the application of the processes, skills and strategies inherent in providing effective leadership. It is recognized that many leadership initiatives are long-term projects: some become short-term successes; some become long-term successes; some are unsuccessful; and some are only ever partially successful. While you may complete your leadership initiative within the timeframe of this course, that is not a requirement of the assignment. Your assignment mark will be based on the overall strategy you devise to achieve your goal/vision, and activities you initiate to implement that strategy. The marking guide provided below will clarify how the assignment will be marked by your instructor.

  2. You should start your planning for this project shortly after you begin working on the first module in the course. Your leadership initiative may be related to either a community or a workplace issue, and it may derive from either a formal or informal leadership role. It is suggested that you consider using an informal leadership initiative related to your workplace as your focus for this assignment, but other options are open to you, depending on your position and circumstances. You should discuss, clarify and confirm your options and your choice of project with your instructor.

  3. A two page description of your proposed leadership initiative, including your reasons for considering it to be a reasonable task to undertake, is to be submitted to your instructor during or shortly after you complete the second module of the course - "Leadership Concepts".

  4. Your instructor will discuss with you the pros and cons of taking on that task, and may offer some suggestions on leadership strategies for your consideration.

  5. Based on this consultation, you should refine the description of your proposal and formulate a clear, concise goal or a vision statement for a realizable goal. Your goal/vision statement should not exceed ½ page in length. You will submit your refined project description and goal/vision statement to your instructor for review and feedback before you complete the fourth module of the course.

  6. Based on your goal/vision statement, you will prepare a step by step plan outlining the strategy and process whereby you will provide leadership towards the realization of that goal. The plan should include information on additional skills or resources you may require, the identities (concealed - use pseudonyms) and roles of people you will need to approach and/or enlist to assist you, the timeframe you think will be required to achieve the goal, and any real or potential obstacles that you may need to address. This five to six page plan will be submitted to your instructor for consultation and feedback (and possible revision) during or shortly after you complete the sixth module of the course.

  7. Following this consultation and feedback, you will begin to implement your plan.

  8. After you complete the ninth module of the course you will submit a three to five page progress report to your instructor describing the steps you have taken so far and their apparent results (e.g., actions taken to acquire skills or resources, obstacles identified, addressed and resolved (or not), colleagues enlisted to you cause, any changes in your strategy resulting from additional information you have acquired in the interim, etc.

  9. After you complete the final module of the course you will submit a three to five page updated progress report to your instructor describing additional steps taken and their apparent results (e.g., actions taken to acquire skills or resources, obstacles identified, addressed and resolved (or not), colleagues enlisted to you cause, any changes in your strategy resulting from additional information you have acquired in the interim, etc.).

  10. Your assignment documents should be typed in Arial or Times Roman font, size 12, double spaced with page margins of 1" (top, bottom and sides). and should have a cover page (title page) that includes the title of the paper, the name of the student, the date submitted, name of the course, and name of the instructor. A list of References, correctly formatted as per the APA Style Guide, should also be included. (Title page and Bibliography are not included in the page count for the assignment)
